  1. Identify which federal laws (FMLA, ADA, PWFA, Workers' Comp) apply to a given leave situation and understand what each does — and does not — require regarding benefits continuation.

  2. Locate and interpret the relevant provisions in plan documents, certificates of coverage, and group contracts to determine an employee's eligibility during leave.

  3. Recognize the key variables - leave type, duration, benefit type, and employee classification - that affect how eligibility rules should be applied.

  4. Apply a consistent, multi-step process for evaluating leave situations that reduces legal exposure and supports equitable treatment across the workforce.

  5. Align handbook and written leave policies with plan document requirements to avoid gaps, conflicts, or ambiguous language that creates compliance risk.
